David Lawrence – Birmingham Mail

Frustrated Moseley chief Adam Balding admitted he will be poring over the match video to try and see why his pack continually incurred the wrath of the officials in this tense clash with league leaders Rams.

Referee Ben Rayner was unhappy with the home side’s scrum throughout, giving countless penalties to the visitors and issuing numerous warnings to skipper Ollie Stedman both before and after he had sent prop Ethan Priest to the sin bin.

Moseley’s director of rugby said: “The frustration for us was the amount of penalties. I thought it was very even throughout the game in terms of physicality but to come out with such a harsh penalty count is something we are going to have to look at.

“It can’t just be about one side. Scrummaging is about two sides, We were probably a bit too honest if I’m honest and so that’s something we will review in training. A lot of it comes down to general understanding and unless you have been in the front row yourself then a lot of it is guesswork.

“I have to be honest, some of the angles they were setting up with were questionable but if they are getting away with it then they’re not doing anything wrong are they. It is about playing to the letter of the law and playing to the officials. The referee thought it was fine but we thought differently. Ultimately they have won the game. They’ve chanced their arm and it has paid dividends for them.”

Such issues were far from the minds of the Moseley coaches as they saw their side open up an early 14-point lead as hooker Ryan Roach trundled over from two well-worked catch and drive moves.

Rams edged their way back into the contest though, closing the gap to 14-10 by the break as hooker Max Hayman and no8 Robbie Stapley ploughed through, the latter coming moments after Priest was carded.

Another Hayman effort saw them nose ahead early in the second half only for Mose to hit back, going through the phases before prop Hameed Ajayi crashed over.

But another penalty three minutes from the end saw the visitors claim the win, Hayman completing his hat-trick after the forwards opted to run the ball,

Balding added: “The character that our lads showed for 80 minutes was superb. If we play like that until the end of the season then we will win more games than we lose.”
