Birmingham Moseley 35-24 Esher                                            by Paul Smith

Inspired by a brace of second-half tries from skipper Ollie Stedman Birmingham Moseley opened their seasonal account with a bonus point win over Esher.

Adam Balding’s team started slowly and trailed by 14 points at the end of the opening quarter before dominating the middle section of the contest to build a match-clinching lead.

Playing down the slope the visitors deservedly opened the scoring when scrum half Pierre Thompson darted to the line in support of a Nathan Jibulu burst.

Sam Morley converted, and Esher’s fly half soon split the uprights for a second time to upgrade a close-range score from huge loose head prop Theo Skoumbourdis.

After home fly half Ben Palmer cut their advantage with a well-struck 40-metre penalty, better followed for the hosts when hooker Sam McNulty barged his way over on the end of a brilliant move spanning multiple phases for a try which Palmer improved.

Moseley introduced a second McNulty from the bench shortly before the break and Isaac wasted no time in making his mark. His powerful burst carried the red-and-blacks to within a metre of the visitors’ line from where Ollie Stedman finished the job off.

Palmer’s conversion gave the hosts a three-point advantage and they went very close to extending it when Sam Pointon intercepted and raced 60 metres before being hauled down a metre from the Esher line.

Sam McNulty’s action-packed evening continued when he was sent to the sin bin for foul play but the numbers were soon equalised when Jibulu joined his opposite number on the naughty step.

Palmer’s second penalty then extended Moseley’s advantage before skipper Stedman applied the finishing touch in the wide channels following good carries from his front row.

Moseley secured the bonus point when Pointon raced under the posts for a score which Palmer improved only for Esher to keep a toe-hold in the contest by driving replacement hooker Andrew Hamilton over from a close-range lineout.

And the visitors were firmly back in contention with six minutes remaining when winger Ben Robbins dived into the corner for their fourth try before Palmer’s late penalty eased home nerves.
